A New Use for a {Pretty} Old Thing

A tarnished silver teapot. Many would pass it by; some might call it ugly. I picked it up and brought it home.




I don't mind the tarnish; I kind of like it. It looks especially pretty as a contrast against the rich colors of fall.  I have a use for it {I knew I eventually would}. It's holding my stash of plastic bags, ready to be reused.


On a table near the back door, it stands ready to hold one of the supplies most needed in a home with two golden retrievers.


Not the most gracious use, I know. But I do not serve tea every day and I do need these bags every day.  Have you ever seen a prettier container for them? It becomes part of the fall decor... in a most useful way!

Vintage Wooden Printer's Block Type {It's Beautiful}

I had a great day at work the other day. Really all of them are pretty great, I truly love my job. I am a graphic artist and I get paid to be creative.Tthe people I work with are nice and the atmosphere is inspiring.


So when I 'had' to go pick out vintage wooden printer's blocks for some signage, of course I had a smile on my face. 


A day on the job, getting paid for checking out some antiques, playing with vintage type... um, yeah, it was a fun day.


Aren't these letters great? The blocks are color stained from use in days gone by... and in their "dirty" form are quite beautiful. The colors are rich and beautiful.


Thousands of letters to choose from, all in different sizes and type styles and colors.






I brought my camera from home to bring along as I knew there would be some beautiful images to be had.


Love this huge E... if only my name was Elizabeth or Emily. The symbols are pretty fun, too.


Has the name Emily every looked so pretty? Yes, the L is backwards.... it has to be that way to print properly and you can't exactly flip it like you can the other letters. It contributes to the interest in the groupings I think.


The woman who owns the business attends the Printers Row fair each year. Wouldn't these make great gifts?

Fall is Here {On the Mantel}

I like to do a little something different with my fall decor each year. I kept some of the same floral elements as last year, but added a few new items. I began with a thrifted silver vase filled with fallen branches from the yard.


This collection of branches started out with a Halloween idea in mind. I was going to spray paint them. The more I looked at the plain branches contrasting with the bright silver vase I decided to keep them natural.


The vase was the first thing I put on the mantel. I confess I like the simple beauty of this piece all by itself. Not for this fall, but perhaps in January... when the house has been dressed to the hilt for several months and I am ready for a clean and simple slate.

 

I tucked some fall picks on the side of each of the items on the mantel and included this cute tag sale painting of a fall street scene.



Rather than stick with typical oranges, reds and yellows, I like the bright yellow-green of the apples. The color is the same as in the painting. Warm and bright at the same time.


I would love to live on this street. It is right out of a storybook setting.


A bouquet of mums with leaves and pumpkin sprays warm it up a bit. It was nice to get the mantel done. It's really the first thing you see when you walk into the room. Fall has come to the dining room!

A Bar.... in an Armoire!

Armoire: {noun} a tall piece of furniture that usually has two doors and that is used to store things (such as clothes). So it goes according to Merriam-Webster. An armoire is most definitely a fabulous piece of furniture. Stately, large and worthy of attention... my attention, it seems. 

Lately I have been eyeing armoires in resale & antique shops. I could use it to store clothes. I could also use it to store my collection of dishes and vintage silver. Or, it could be turned into a bar... yes... a bar in an armoire.

Do I need a bar? No.... I don't have a stock of liquor, nor do I entertain as much as I might like these days. But this.... this piece is so pretty. I can picture my collection of Waterford crystal, bits of vintage silver and pretty bottles lined up; I could fill in with French lemonade and Perrier!. I like the mirror behind the glassware as well; it adds an extra boost to the shimmer of fancy glass and crystal.

I could use one in the bedroom. What girl couldn't use an extra spot to store her favorite sweaters, handbags and shoes? This next one is sweet too.... glass doors to show off all the pretties inside. I would have to be very neat to truly enjoy its beauty.

This one works as extra storage in the kitchen. I don't have a lot of wall space in my kitchen and dining area, so it's not really practical. in my current house.

The mirrored panels are so pretty on this one. This would look beautiful and function in any room of the home.

This one below holds all the treasures a little girl could want! They don't get much curvier than this.

I'm on the lookout for an armoire.... something curvy, old and sturdy would be nice. I'll know it when I see it!

Scarves of Many Colors {In Vintage Luggage} & Share the Love Wednesday!

I have a bit of problem with scarves... I can't resist them. Although I don't wear them too often in summer; I do sport one most days of the week winter, spring and fall.


The best way I have found to store them is in one of my vintage suitcases right on top of a dresser in my bedroom.

I love all of the pretty colors just waiting to be added to an outfit. If I can see them, I'm more likely to wear them. I've found that to be true with all of my accessories.


I fold them in half or thirds, twist the length and then make a loose knot, tucking in the ends at the center. They almost resemble flowers... or even little cinnamon rolls!



Before I started rolling them up I had simply folded them and they always ended up in a messy pile.





Now they're almost a pretty accessory in and of themselves for the room--a decorative accent to enjoy in more ways than one!
